Inter Miami's Lionel Messi has been named Major League Soccer Player of the Month for April following his exceptional form after recovering from injury.

The Argentina international icon missed four Inter Miami games due to a hamstring injury before returning to action on April 6.

The 36-year star scored six goals and four assists in four games to capture his first MLS Player of the Month award.

Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino said he is not surprised with Messi's win.

Martino said ahead of Inter Miami's clash against the New York Red Bulls: "Messi can move everywhere on the pitch, he is the best footballer in the world and a great goalscorer.

"We are no longer playing so often so that is why Messi is recovering his form."

Miami are on the top of the Eastern Conference table with 21 points in 11 games.
